Spider-Verse is coming, Spider-Men Unite This November

Spider-Verse_Dell'Otto_Banner

Before I get into nerding out over this, for those of you who just want the basic gist, this November in Amazing Spider-Man #9 every Spider-Man in history will be coming together in Spider-Verse. Dan Slott and Olivier Coipel are bringing this years Spider-Event together, and as you can see in the image above, there are a ridiculous amount of possibilities here. Now that’s the gist, if you want to hear me be a nerd about Spidey for a few paragraphs read on, or you can skip to the end for the official press release and cover.

I’m going to try and keep this as level and reasonable as possible, but frankly I’m really excited about what this is announcing, so no promises. So I grew up with the ’90s X-Men and Spider-Man cartoons, and as a kid I was enthralled with the Secret Wars story line in Spider-Man. Bringing in all those different heroes was just awesome, and to follow it up with another team made out of nothing but various parallel world Spider-Men was just about the coolest thing I’d ever seen. Now this was around the time I first read comics too, and while I didn’t really know enough to follow anything properly Spider-Man was my book of choice. At the time I believe I bought random Spider-Man 2099 and Scarlet Spider books, hence being a fan of those characters today.

So now fast forward, a lot, and I actually get into comic collecting via Eric and the Ultimate Universe. After getting my feet wet there I started reading back issues of Amazing Spider-Man starting with J. Michael Straczynski’s run. While some of the things he did in his run had fans ticked off for a long time, I loved the idea that Pete’s powers were deeper than just a flawed science experiment. The idea that he was part of something much bigger, and that him being Spider-Man wasn’t an accident after all, it just worked for me.

With that out of the way, lets talk about the actual announcement here, I don’t usually get so detailed when these things come out, but I just had to for this one. Every line of it had me growing more and more interested. You’ll see what I’m talking about in a bit, but for now let’s break some stuff down.

First up as the title indicates the event is going to be called Spider-Verse, it’s happening this November starting with Amazing Spider-Man #9 and the creative team is going to be Dan Slott and Olivier Coipel. Both of these guys are great, and I really hope Coipel is going to be a part of the Spidey artist rotation. Hell he may already be and I just missed the news somewhere. Anyway, This is a pretty cool team of creators. Slott is great at weaving detailed and intricate stories, look at what he’s done so far! Now these Spider-Events tend to be grand in scale, and frankly work out way better than the big Marvel events that happen pretty much all the time.

Without any other information, this would be enough to have me picking up all the issues without a second thought. But we do have more information, like every Spider-Man in history will be a part of a team put together to defeat one of Spidey’s fiercest foes. Not Green Goblin, not Doc Ock, but Morlun. If you didn’t read Amazing Spider-Man in the early 2000’s you probably wouldn’t remember this guy, but he was deadly and wanted nothing more than to destroy Spidey. I’m not getting into the details, but it’s definitely work check out the story around Morlun, if for no other reason than to prepare yourself for this story.

Who knows how this is going to work, but the press release mentions a few familiar names like Peter Parker (who should be expected), Miguel O’Hara (who also makes sense right now), and Miles Morales. But it also uses the words ” It will take thousands of spider-powered heroes to battle back the greatest threat to this universe or any other!”, and then you look at the promo art (at the top), and see all the different Spider-Men. Ben Reilly, Superior, Black Suit, Armored, and so many more! The possibilities here are crazy, and it really takes a mad scientist like mind, one that Dan Slott has demonstrated to have, to pull something like this off.

I may very well be in the minority here for excitement about this, and if it was a run of the mill Marvel event I probably wouldn’t care nearly as much. But being a Spider-Man event helmed by a team of creators who work wonders, and pull all kinds of nostalgia strings on top of that, I just can’t not be excited for this stuff. I know it’s generally bad form to be so enthusiastic when reporting on a piece of news, but you know what screw that. What’s the point of reporting on this kind of thing if you can’t express your fandom about the topic!

Alright, now that I’ve got, mostly everything I wanted to say out, how about I get to the official release. and some pictures too!
