Paper Mario has been around for over 10 years. Let that sink in for a second. . . Ten. Years.
It’s wild to think that the first time I played a game in this franchise was on Nintendo 64 at my grandmothers house. I walked to the store because I was too young to drive. Little did I know that on that day I was purchasing the first game in amazing series that would continue over the next 12 years with 4 fantastic games!
What makes the original Paper Mario so ingenious is the same thing that helps The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker remain a timeless classic – it’s visual style. Doing away with realistic graphics in favor of cartoon style paper craft means that years later the games will still look fantastic! Best yet, the visual style isn’t just for aesthetic appeal. The game actually takes into account that the players and enemies are all made of paper by incorporating that knowledge into it’s puzzle design.
If you haven’t played the games, I highly recommend checking out Paper Mario Sticker Star for the Nintendo 3DS! And to help you get caught up with the story, here’s a handy infographic on the history of Paper Mario!
