Friday Five – Fictional Moms

Mothers Day Card

Welcome to the Friday Five! Each week we help you get to know our writers a little better with the help of a top five list. This weeks category: Fictional Moms.

Mothers Day is just a few days away, so to celebrate we thought we list our favorite fictional moms. It’s funny to think about how they moms in fictional TV shows can really ground the family in place. But, as evidenced by our selections, they’re mostly just as zany as any other characters on a show! Check out our choices below.

Pisko

  1. Turanga Munda (Futurama)
  2. Amy Matthews (Boy Meets World)
  3. Mallory Archer (Archer)
  4. Linda Stotch (South Park)
  5. Lucille Bluth (Arrested Development) – Despite her and Mallory Archer having the same voice actor and being pretty much the same character.

Chris

  1. Sarah Connor (Terminator Series) – I don’t really know whether she was more concerned about her kid or the fact that in the future he was suppose to lead humans to victory over the machines, but she still kicked a lot of ass keeping him safe.
  2. Mary Cooper (The Big Bang Theory) – The only person on the show who even has a small amount of control over Sheldon. While the rest of the gang can sometimes get their way with him, when the situation gets dire they just call his mom.
  3. Daenerys Targaryen – A Song of Ice and Fire (Game of Thrones) – While not a mother to people, she is a mother to Dragons, and if you haven’t read/watched this stuff you’re missing out.
  4. Kate McCallister (Home Alone) – Sure she left her kid at Home Alone while going on vacation during Christmas with the rest of her family, sure she let him get on the wrong plane while going on another vacation during Christmas. But I’ll be damned if she didn’t try really hard to find him afterwards!
  5. Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch (Marvel Comics) – Okay yes Wanda is less of a mother than pretty much everyone else mentioned. The kids she had were subconscious constructs in reality from her chaos powers or something like that. But when she thought they got taken away from her she lost her mind and was ready to rip the world in half to find them.

Eric

  1. Marie Barone (Everybody Loves Raymond) – She reminds me of a certain mother I have in my life. . . :p
  2. Aunt May (Spider-Man) – While not technically a mom in the traditional sense, she is still the mother figure to Peter Benjamin Parker. He wouldn’t be the hero he was before ASM#700 without this awesome lady in his life.
  3. Lois (Malcolm in the Middle) – She was strict and didn’t take shit from any of her kids. Absolutely hilarious!
  4. Mrs. Wolowitz (Big Bang Theory) – While JohnScott used Mrs. Costanza as his favorite “jewish mom,” I’d have to go with Howards mom. She has no filter, and will generally shout whatever is necessary to embarrass Howard. She’s also never been seen on the show.
  5. Claire (Lost) – She had a baby on a deserted island. Then lost the baby. Of course she went insane after this. Tragic story, but an amazing character.
