Friday Five – Can’t Skip Movies

Welcome to the Friday Five! Each week we help you get to know our writers with the help of a top 5 list. The category for this week is Movies You Can’t Skip.
 
It’s Sunday afternoon. Your team isn’t playing this week, so you’re channel surfing. Suddenly, you land on a movie that you’ve seen a million times. It’s more than half way through, and you own the DVD. Still, you stop. You laugh out loud, or gasp, as if the first time you’ve seen this movie. It’s one you can’t skip. We all have them. Here’s ours!
 

Chris

1. Mallrats – I’ve seen this movie more times that I could ever count. For a long stretch it was my go to when I had nothing else to watch I would just pop it on and laugh. Now it’s more of a “If it’s on I watch it no matter what”. Shame it’s not on more often though.
2. Indiana Jones – Raiders and Last Crusade – I love all the Indiana Jones movies, even Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, but Raiders and Crusade were the best and any time USA or Spike are doing marathons of those movies I will inevitably tune in for those two no matter where they’re at in it.
3. Empire Strikes Back – A lot like Indiana Jones I love the Star Wars movies, I prefer the originals but I’ll watch the prequels if I have nothing better to do. When Empire is on though I’ll sit through the whole damn thing almost every time.
4. Ghostbusters – Who doesn’t love the Ghostbusters? Comedy Central and a few other channels play them pretty frequently and it’s great when I’m sitting at home to have such a great movie to watch almost anytime.
5. Commando – this certainly isn’t the best movie in the world, but come on it’s Arnold in all his ’80s glory killing an army without even getting a flesh wound till the very end. And he carries a damn tree by himself in the beginning!

 

 

Shannon

1. Kiki’s Delivery Service
2. Sister Act
3. Hocus Pocus
4. The Nightmare Before Christmas
5. National Treasure (1 or 2)

 

 

Vogel

1. Bram Stokers Dracula – I’ve always loved this movie. This and the next movie really show the range of Gary Oldman.
2. Leon: The Professional – It has to be Leon, not just The Professional. Some of the scenes are a little different and the Leon version is a little longer.
3. The Breakfast Club – For a long time this was my go to movie to listen to while I was working on my computer. It’s serious enough that you can listen to it and not get lost, but funny enough to still catch the jokes when you’re only paying 25% attention to it.
4. The Boondock Saints – I remember the first time I watched this movie and thinking that it was spectacular. I have introduced quite a few people to this movie and haven’t met one yet that hasn’t loved it.
5. Galaxy Quest – I actually have watched this movie 3 times in the last 2 days. I still crack up laughing at the jokes everytime I see it, and I’m sure it’s in the dozens. My wife (Shannon) was looking at me like I was a lunatic they other day because I was laughing uncontrollably at one of the jokes.

 

 

Eric

Well, not having had cable for the last 2 years doesn’t help me out with this one. Since everything I watch is something I choose on Netflix, or put in the Bluray player myself, I tend to watch it all the way through anyway. . . But there are some movies that I just can’t walk away from when they’re on TV at other peoples houses.

1. Step Brothers – When I had cable, I also had HBO. Step Brothers was the big movie then, and I couldn’t get enough of it. I watched it almost daily.
2. Forgetting Sarah Marshall – This is one of my number one movies, especially in terms of quotability. It’s been on at my parents house a few times, and I can’t focus on anything else besides this when it’s on.
3. I Love You Man – Same as Forgetting Sarah Marshall. Fantastic movie, that I can’t walk away form when it’s on.
4. Marvel Cinematic Universe – Anything from this studio is automatically a must watch.
5. Doctor Who – I cheated here. But when I’m at the Gym and I change the channels and land on Doctor Who I stop. Nothing else matters. Doctor Who’s on!
