Friday Five – Best of E3 2014

Welcome to the Friday Five! Each week we help you get to know our writers with the help of a top 5 list! This week: Best of E3 2014

It’s that time again, E3 2014 is wrapped up, but it’s left us with plenty to look forward to in gaming! So this week we’re listing off what we liked most at this years Electronic Entertainment Expo! And don’t miss out on even more E3 chat on next week’s PodQuest which should be up on Monday 6/16/14!

1. Rise of the Tomb Raider Reveal – Last years Tomb Raider reboot was amazing, it was a great way to revitalize the series, and characters. The biggest problem with it was, they forgot the tombs! Apparently that’s going to be fixed in the sequel Rise of the Tomb Raider, Lara will be back to solving puzzles and exploring all kinds of nasty places. If they keep the game half as engaging as the previous one, this will easily be one of the best of the series, and I can’t wait for it in I believe 2015.
2. Bioware – Bioware had some great annoucments and stuff. I really want to play Dragon Age, I’ve wanted to for years now, every time I start I get distracted and end up having to start over when I finally do go back. Inquisition may actually be the title that gets me to play the first two finally, it just looks that good. Oh and let’s not forget a Mass Effect sequel! I know a lot of people were left with a bad taste in their mouths at the end of 3, to them I say get over yourself! The games were all great, and this one should be just as fun.
3. Halo Master Chief Collection I haven’t played a Halo since 3, but man did I play the hell out of those first three games, especially the multiplayer. Now to have a chance to go back and play all of the main games in the series again, with original multiplayer and updated graphics? That’s like a dream! Unfortunately I don’t have an Xbox One, but this would certainly be a title I’d own if I ever get one.
4. Legend of Zelda Wii U Who doesn’t love Zelda games? I’ve been playing them for as long as I can remember, unfortunately in recent years my playtime has been mostly the handheld games (which are awesome!) I hope with this stunning new Zelda console title I’ll finally get back into the wonderful and dangerious world of Hyrule.
5. Uncharted – The last pick was really hard for me this time, so many good things happened at E3. I had to go with Uncharted though, we knew it was in the works, and it was expected to get a trailer at E3, but still it looked beautiful. And I can’t wait to pick up the game whenever it releases.

Honorable Mention First Person Shooters – I’m not really an FPS fan, but wow are there some interesting titles coming out that may just change my mind on the genre. I’m never going to be interested in Call of Duty, but games like Rainbow Six Seige, Battlefield Hardline, Destiny, and Farcry 4 just make you want to play them all the time!

1. Little Big Planet 3 – The new characters are going to add so much to the game. Not only will it be cool to discover what they can do, but the levels that users create with these new characters in mind are going to be amazing!
2. Yoshi’s Wooly World – I love Yoshi, the games are a little easier than the Mario games, so it will be perfect for me.
3. Halo 5 – I’ve always loved the Halo series, they’re pretty much the only shooter I’ll play.
4. Destiny – Ok, Halo being the only shooter I play might change with this game. It looks amazing.
5. Star Wars Battlefront – My brother and I used to play this together. I’m hoping this is another game that will actually make me game more.

Honorable Mention – Sims 4 is coming out this September so I’ll definitely be getting the for my birthday.

Well, I feel like this E3 was pretty… ok. Nothing blew my mind, but everything was pretty damned exciting. There weren’t really that many big reveals that we didn’t already know about ahead of this conference. And most of the biggest announcements are games for 2015, which means we’ll more than likely see them at the next E3… again. It’s rather underwhelming. I’ll explain better on PodQuest next week, so check it out.

1. Assassin’s Creed Unity – I had very low expectations for this game. I had every intention on not picking it up day 1. However, with the gameplay shown and the inclusion of 4 player co-op… I’m sold. Seriously, this is the most agile and acrobatic assassin in the series and, he can crouch at the press of a button! Finally introducing proper stealth to the series!
2. Rainbow Six Siege – This was the absolute best closing reveal of any of the big conferences. Literally the only game that wasn’t teased, or leaked in anyway, before it hit the stage. Fantastic looking game.
3. Absu – I don’t care about any details. It looks like Journey underwater. I NEED IT! If you haven’t played Journey yet, do it. You’ll understand.
4. Legend of Zelda – We knew it would be announced, but I was quite pleased with the short tease we were given. It was a lot more impressive than the 12 seconds of Nathan Drake we saw at the tail end of Sony’s Presser. I would have loved to have seen more LoZ tho. Also, Hyrule Warriors has a US release date! I didn’t think it was gonna happen!
5. Rise of the Tomb Raider – I really enjoyed the first game in the rebooted franchise, however it felt off. I’m glad to hear that this next game “will put the tombs back in Tomb Raider” as they said at Crystal Dynamics. It’s going to be nice to have the new survival style gameplay coupled with the puzzle solving/tomb exploring of the classic games.

Honorable Mention: Kirby and the Rainbow Curse – Canvas Curse was far too awesome to let it just disappear! I’m so glad to be getting a sequel that’s coming to Wii U!

Pisko

1. The Legend of Zelda Wii U – WOAH. TRULY open world. Sprawling scenery. A sweet uneasy marriage of Wind Waker and Skyward Sword visuals. AN ADULT LINK. Leaping off a horse and attacking! This game has it all and we don’t know shit about it yet. Still, nothing has made me pine for a game this much since Skyward came out.
2. Halo: The Master Chief Collection – This is super exciting to me if only for the remastered Halo 2 Anniversary edition. All 4 Halo games have their original multiplayer in tact (they don’t all have to use Reach’s matchmaking). All the games are set to run at 1080p @ 60fps on the xbox one and Halo 5 beta access is included with the package as well as the Knightfall show when it premiers.
3. Amiibo – For all the forward thinking Nintendo did in putting NFC into the gamepad, they sure took their sweet ass time making anything that works with it. (I know Pokemon Rumble used it, but not very well) The toys themselves look incredibly high quality which makes me nervous of the price, but the promise of having an autonomous helper at your fingertips that will learn and cross multiple games might be enough to justify the cost.
4. Sony – They snuck a few not-too-subtle “Fuck you”’s at Microsoft through out the press conference but otherwise they brought a 1-2-punch of games, games, and more fucking games. The only real problem with Sony this year was they instead of just letting the Vita languish against the 3DS they now insist it’s an accessory to the PS4. Little Big Planet 3, Uncharted 4, Ratchet & Clank remake, games, games, games. Sony wins mostly because they are the only company who remembered to both bring and talk about games that are ACTUALLY COMING OUT THIS YEAR.
