Friday Five – Foods You Used to Hate (or Still Do)
Welcome to the Friday Five! Each week we help you get to know our writers with the help of a top 5 list. This weeks category is: Foods You Used to Hate (or Still Do).
So, we all hate foods. And sometimes we grow out of that. Some times we don’t. These are the stories of those foods.
Shannon
Most of the things I didn’t like as a child still don’t make it to my plate now. There are a few things that I was never willing to try when I was little, that I eat often now.
- Steak – I was never a big red meat person, I’d have the occasional burger at a party, but I never wanted to eat steak. After I started to date Rob we had steak often and now it’s a treat when we have it.
- Chicken Parm – Not really sure why I never wanted to try this. I like eggplant parm and I like chicken. Now this is one of the few things I order at diners.
- Water – Ok, not really a food, but I’m running out of options. I never drank plain water as a kid, so more recently I’m forced myself to drink water a lot so I’m pretty much only drinking it.

- Sauerkraut – I used to hate sauerkraut. Like, with a passion. My family made it all the time and I couldn’t stand it. One day I tried it again for almost no reason and it was great. I can even eat it cold now I love it so much.
- Mountain Dew – I never really was a big fan of mountain dew. I liked the voltage flavor, but be honest. It was just pepsi blue/ blue raspberry sprite. When Halo 4 came out I bought a lot of mountain dew for the xp boost and I tried the regular flavor again and discovered I liked it.
- Spicy foods – You can ask Eric about the potatoes, spicy foods have never really agreed with me but now I love them. I still keep the spice at a moderate level, but I really enjoy the flavor.
- Sour foods – I used to love sour foods. When I was young there was this stuff that was, well, slimy. It was a test tube filled with this goopy liquid that was super sour. I used to eat 2 or 3 at a time. I think I may have overdone it because now sour things make me sick. I love lemons and lemon flavored foods, but if it’s too tart, I feel sick.
Pisko
- Broccoli – Used to hate it. Would only eat the “tree tops”. Then I discovered that it could be cooked properly and taste freaking delicious! Even better raw!
- Chick Peas – Again, never prepared properly for me as a kid which is why I probably hated them. Now they are a staple in every salad I eat. Like, every one. Also, hummus. AMAZING.
- Spinach – I’m just gonna tell you my mother was a horrible cook. Spinach was always too watery and over boiled (Yes, you can do that). Once I discovered spinach in leaf form for salads instead of cruddy lettuce I was sold. Also, creamy spinach cooked correctly is now one of my favorite sides.
- Roast Beef – I’m not really sure why but my taste buds were never buds with roast beef as a kid. I hated it hot. I hated it cold. I hated everything about it. Then around 16 my tongue decided to try hanging out with RB again and my world was rocked. I still don’t really prefer it hot, but cold on a sammich… OH MAN.
- Brussel Sprouts – Nope, still hate them. Tolerable now, but still full of hate. Guess not everything changes. Though, I can now eat them without gagging… So that’s a plus.

Um. . . I can’t list things I used to hate and now enjoy, because everything I’ve tried recently has not changed my opinion at all. So I’ll list those, and 1 exception.
- Shrimp – And really all seafood. The smell is such a turn off for me, I can’t stand it. I’ve been trying different things, but most recently it ended up with calamari spit out in a napkin and me downing 3 sodas to remove the flavor. BARF!
- Corn – It’s. . . weird. But also the smell I suppose. I can do corn chips, corn flakes, corn bread, pop corn, but no corn. Not at all.
- Peas – They’re flavorless, and dumb, and stupid. I hate them.
- Olives – I’ve tried them. I still do when I see them. Something about them looks appetizing, but they never are.
- Salad Dressing – When I was a kid I ate my salad plain. It was really plain. I stopped doing that quite some time ago.

- Peppers – When I was little I hated these things, I think it’s mostly due to not liking onions and generally those two things go together. Now though I’ll out peppers in anything…still hate onions though
- Sushi – The first time I tries sushi I thought it was gross…now though as long as it’s not gas station sushi I’m down for it.
- Strawberries – I’ve always loved things strawberry flavored but I’m just recently starting to like the actual fruit…something about the texture just didn’t agree with me
- Hot Wings – Really anything hot I used to hate, that weird tingling feeling it leaves on your lips was terrible. Now though I think its great and a good order of wings is never a bad idea.
- Ground Beef – For a while I just didn’t like anything with ground beef in it. I think part of it was the only way I had it was either crappy McDonald’s or the way my mom makes it, which is dry and terrible, but it’s how she liked it. Now if I can have a good burger I’m all for it
