Friday Five – Favorite Legend of Zelda Bosses
Welcome to the Friday Five! Each week we help you get to know our writers with the help of a top five list! The category for this week is: Favorite Zelda Bosses.
Wind Waker HD has just been released digitally, and will see a retail release in the coming weeks. It’s for this reason that we’ve decided to spend the next few weeks celebrating the Legend of Zelda series. From insane puzzles, excellent mechanics, genre defining gameplay, and a story that spans over 15 different titles, you’d be hard pressed to find a bad entry in the series. Of course we’re excluding the CDI games. The Legend of Zelda has been around almost as long as I have. I’ve watched its humble beginnings on the NES with flat 2D sprites, and onto the lush 3D worlds that are now commonplace in the series. One element that has stood out in the games are the bosses. After traveling through the dangerous depths of a dungeon, our hero encounters a massive creature guarding the levels treasure. Some of them are basic, some are incredibly complicated, but all of them are immensely fun. Take a look at our favorite bosses from the 25 year history of the Legend of Zelda series.
Chris
- Agahnim – A Link To The Past – I remember getting to this guy when I was really young and not totally knowing what this game was all about. I thought it was the big final battle because it seemed so epic, then things got nuts and threw you into the Dark World. Anyway the fight was just fun, you had to avoid stuff and knock the attacks back at Agahnim it was the toughest fight up to that point.
- Helmasaur King – A Link To The Past – I thought it was a lot of fun when you get to the first dungeon in Dark World where everything changed. That and I didn’t really read stuff on the screen when I first played this so it took me awhile to realize I had to beat his face with a hammer.
- Dark Link – Ocarina Of Time – He wasn’t really a boss, he was just a pain in the ass mini-boss. From what I hear the Dark Link from Zelda II is was harder, but I never played that one because I’m a bad person. The way this one jumps on your sword and flips away is just really annoying and cocky it’s damn near infuriating.
- Phantom Ganon – Ocarina Of Time – Phantom Ganon was the only boss fight in OOT that kind of had me on edge. Sure they’re all pretty nasty, but Ganon that early in the game is hard to get over. Even if he’s not real, and he jumps in and out of paintings so you can only hit him with a well timed arrow.
- Ganon – Wind Waker – This was cool, not only do you have former pirate Zelda helping you out, Ganon is like a ninja samurai kind of enemy this time.
Pisko!
- Ganon – Legend of Zelda – The pig man scared the crap out of me when I first got there when I was 5. The skull on the floor was particularly ominous.
- Ghoma- Multiple Games – The supremely giant cyclops spider was one of my favorite boss fights in the original NES title and one of the first big moments in Ocarina of Time.
- Twinrova – Ocarina of Time – Fire and Ice witches that combine into a younger, sexier witch? Cool. The battle was the first to use the mirror shield and gave it probably it’s only reason to exist.
- Dark Link – Legend of Zelda II: Link’s Adventure – He knows all your moves and is worse than the final boss fight.
- Bongo Bongo – Ocarina of Time – So cool. You need to use the eye of truth to see and hit him but he can smack you around his drum arena just fine.

- Agahnim – Link To The Past
- Moldorm – Link’s Awakening
- Angler Fish – Link’s Awakening
- Ganon – Ocarina of Time
- Arrghus – Link To The Past

- Godhan – Wind Waker – This is one of those bosses that appears in pretty much every game. I always find their specific mechanics quite interesting.
- Mothula – A Link to the Past – It was a complicated fight that had a neat hidden mechanic. You could use a bee, captured within the dungeon, to damage the boss.
- Aquamentus – Legend of Zelda – The first boss in the original Legend of Zelda. Nothing particularly difficult, but scary as shit to a 10 year old!
- Jalhalla- Wind Waker – This boss consisted of a bunch of ghosts fused together. You couldn’t hit them until you forced the ghost to take a physical form by reflecting light on it with the mirror shield.
- Gannon – Any – Sort of a cop out, but these are some of the most climactic battles in any game series. You’d also think that he’d have developed some sort of immunity to gold arrows by now…
