Friday Five – Epic Moments
Welcome to the Friday Five! Each week we help you get to know our writers with the help of a top five list. This weeks category: Epic Moments!
You know when you’re reading a book, watching a movie, or playing a game, and your significant other starts saying your name but you just can’t pull away from what you’re doing to pay attention? When you’re so immersed in the moment that nothing, literally nothing, can break your concentration. That’s an epic moment. It doesn’t need to specifically be a moment containing an epic action. For instance, while the battle between Luke and Darth Vader in Cloud City is most certainly an epic confrontation, one might find the revelation that Darth Vader is Luke’s father more of an epic moment simply due to the weight of the the narrative. There are plenty of these moments in media, and whittling it down to 5 was neigh impossible for some. But here we have it.
I’d also like to take a moment to introduce you all to our newest writer, Dan. He’s as much a nerd as the rest of us, so expect to see more from him in the future.
Chris
- The Avengers – When the team gets together at the end.
- The Dark Knight Rises – When Batman saves Gordon and lights up the bridge.
- Clerks 2 – Star Wars Vs. Lord of the Rings.
- The Princess Bride – Count Rugen Vs. Inigo Montoya.
- Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time & Link to the Past – Getting the Master Sword.
Eric
- Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back – Luke and Vader face off in one epic flippin’ lightsaber battle which ends with the revelation that Darth Vader is the biological father of Luke Skywalker. BOOM! What a tweest!
- Assassin’s Creed II – The ending. While AC1 was pretty tame, it had a fairly intriguing cliffhanger ending. But there was literally nothing in the world that could prepare you for what was about to occur. I mean witnessing Ezio beat the hell out of the Pope was awesome, but when Minerva started speaking to Desmond through Ezio, I flipped shit.
- Uncharted 2: Among Thieves – While I could go on to pretty much make my whole list based off of this game, I’ll stick with just the train segment. Not only was it super tense, it’s one of the most technologically impressive moments in gaming.
- Final Fantasy X – The first battle with Sin. I think I’ve listed this before in another Friday Five, but it needs to be sad again. It’s just one of those moments that literally makes your eyes glaze over in awe. That’s the moment you realize you’ve gotten in over your head.
- Jurassic Park – Seeing the dinosaurs roaming the land for the first time gave me chills like no other movie has. It was beyond epic seeing that in the theaters not only the first time, but every time after that.
Dan
- The newspapers at the end of Bill and Ted 2 revealing they brought peace to the world with the EPIC power of Rock and Roll
- Watching Peter Parker “die” as Doc Ock in ASM #700
- Anything from the first 30mins of the new Tomb Raider
- Anakin getting his legs cut off and left to burn in Return of the Sith after clearly being told he was about to get his legs cut off.
- Anytime 5 pilotable robots come together to form a much larger robot. Best instance: Original Power Rangers and their Dino Zords. Runner Up: Voltron coming together with awesome narration.
Audra
There are too many epics to pick from.
- Inception – When Leonardo brings Juno into his dreams for the first time and everything blows up, the world curves in around itself and Juno starts to mess with reality.
- Girl with the Dragon Tattoo Series – Book and movie. There were so many badass parts throughout the series. The one that most will remember is when Lisbeth’s guardian is planning to sadistically rape her, again, but she uses her taser gun to knock him unconscious. While he’s down, she ties him up and tattoos, “I’m a sadistic pig, and a rapist”, having never tattooed before in her life.
- Eragon – When you find out Murtaugh is Eragon’s half brother!!!
- The Avengers – Pretty much the entire movie, but for the sake of this list I’ll narrow it down to the interactions between the Hulk and Thor. Like when Thor smashes Hulk in the face with Mew Mew and when Hulk smashes Thor in the face with his fist.
- The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time – At the very end, it pans back to when Link and Zelda both meet for the first time in the Castle garden as children. They lock eyes and the image freezes and ages.
That video reminds me that 90’s rock in power rangers was awesome. That thunder zord song always pumped me up!
