Games You (Probably) Should Have Played – H

GYPSHP_H

We can finally say that Next Generation in gaming is in full swing with the release of the final 2 entries in console war in just about a months time. To commemorate this event we’ve decided to take a look back at all of our favorite games, in alphabetical order, across every generation. We’re calling this the Games You (Probably) Should Have Played.

Some of our choices will be mainstream titles, some will be indie games that you’ve probably never heard of. A handful of these selections will be older then you, while others are younger than your car. All that matters is that in some way we feel that these games are worth playing. So come along for the ride, as we move into game that start with “H”. Don’t forget to tell us what your favorites are in the comments below!

Heavy Rain (PS3 – 2010)
I played this game for the first time about a year ago, and wow is it crazy. I’m sure if you’re reading this you’ve heard of Heavy Rain, and you’ve certainly heard of the developers new title Beyond: Two Souls, which while it looks great has been getting terrible reviews. Heavy Rain is such a step away from tradition games, you play as various characters trying to solve a crime for various reasons. And the weirdest thing is at any time your choices can have the character killed, and that’s it they’re dead. In fact you can get all of your characters killed and that’s it, it’s not a game over, your game just finishes out with everyone dead. It’s a pretty ballsy move, and it honestly paid off a lot, plus open game play made exploring and looking for clues fun.

Half-Life 2 (PC – 2004)
Half-Life 2 helped define the FPS genre. While Half-Life introduced the series, and the enigmatic world that would soon encompass Portal (and possible Left 4 Dead), it features numerous headaches and poor design decisions that keep it from being a must play. However, Half-Life 2 took the FPS further than it had ever been taken. No longer were we just playing a game, we were interacting with the world, and the plot. Living as Gordon Freeman in this world overrun by aliens, and corrupt officials. This game made you feel for the characters and their well being, which has made the 6 year wait since it’s most recent episodic entry nearly unbearable. If you want to know where Call of Duty and Halo get their inspiration from, play Half-Life 2.
